Karaikudi is situated in the Sivaganga district, located on the south east of Madurai and the town has surround by a number of places of heritage interest nurtured by the old community in their days of glory. Situated in the midst of the old Chettinad region, dominated by `Nagarathars', also known as Chettiars, a community blessed with a rare financial acumen and an inborn talent for trade. It is because of this that Karaikudi is often known as the ‘Capital of Chettinad region’, which comprises Karaikudi and 74 other villages. This Chettinad region is famous for its palatial mansions, arts and crafts, embellishing their homes that reflect a conglomeration of architecture and building styles. Among these the first one is the Raja of Chettinad's palace and the museum next door. The palace is a delight and the house next door which has been turned into a museum, is also an experience in itself. This place is also famous for the famous Athangudi tiles. There are many temples to be seen here. Karaikudi got its name because of the famous plant called "Karai" which is widely spread over this area. Take an en route visit to Karaikudi and smell the age old remnants which history has left behind there. Chettinad is very well known for its culinary delicacies which are essentially spicy and delicious. The river Thennar flows through South Karaikudi. The best time to take a tour to Sivagangai is from November to January. |

Located 12 km away from Karaikudi which is also in the Sivagangai district and there is the famous Karpaka Vinayakar Temple which can be seen here. This is one of the oldest rock- cut cave temple, in Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity of the Temple is Karpaga Pillaiyar and from there comes the name of the village Pillaiyar Village. The idol is a 6 feet tall mammoth image of Ganesha and the temple itself dates back to the 4th century. The temple was expanded from the 10th to the 12th century and recently a lot of renovations are occurring. The city is also known for Sri Meenakshi-Sundareswarar temple, also known as Sivan Temple which was built during 1872. |
